What Is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual celebration, taking place on April 22, aimed at raising awareness about the need for environmental stability globally and honoring the achievements of the environmental movement thus far. Earth Day is celebrated in 141 countries across the world!
The History of Earth Day
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 and officially marks the first day of the modern environmental movement. In decades prior, automobiles were consuming such large quantities of leaded gas that air population was just accepted as the new norm. That is, until 1962, when Rachel Carson’sSilent Spring was published. Selling across 24 countries, people suddenly became concerned about the fate of living organisms, the environment, and the links between pollution and public health.
Following a 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, Junior Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconson was inspired to establish a “teach-in” across college campuses. Activist Denis Hayes helped organize the event and spread it across the country, coining the name Earth Day. More than 10% of the US population participated in demonstrations against the industrialization that was causing the pollution problem.
This day was successful in achieving political support from Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs, and led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, quickly leading to never-before-seen environmental laws.
How to Celebrate Earth Day
The best way to celebrate Earth Day is to get outdoors and enjoy and appreciate nature! Consider riding your bike or walking to nearby errands instead of driving, take a trip to the beach, or go for a bike ride in the park. Even just sitting in your own backyard allows for endless opportunities for you and your family to get a breath of fresh air. If you can’t get time away from work or the kids have virtual school, take your responsibilities outside with the HomePower ONE! Power your portable generator conscientiously with the SolarPower ONE, then plug in your laptop, cell phone, and other home office necessities.
This Earth Day, take some time to think about how you can be conscientious about your carbon footprint and its affect on the environment.
