How to Best Prepare for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season is here and here to stay, so it’s best to prepare your family, your home, and your community. Hurricanes can be one of the most dangerous natural disasters and can cause significant damage due to storm surges, wind damage, rip currents, and flooding. Although they can happen along any U.S. coast or any territory in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, hurricanes are not just a coastal problem. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2021 will be an active Atlantic hurricane season with its peak from mid-August to October.

The 2020 season was already an extremely busy one for hurricanes, with a total of 14 storms formed over the Atlantic, the most since 2005, six of which were major hurricanes. On the other hand, 2019 was a subdued hurricane season with only six hurricanes, half of which were significant.

How to Prepare:

1. Make an Emergency Plan

The first step is always creating an emergency plan with your family that directly assesses your family’s needs. The plan will also evaluate your hurricane risks, shelter plan, and knowing your evacuation zone should you need to evacuate quickly. Learn how to make your family emergency plan here.

2. Recognize Warnings and Alerts

This seems like a relatively small step, but it’s crucial to have several ways to receive alerts. Download weather apps to receive real-time updates or sign-up for community alerts. And be aware of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) in your area and understand what their alerts mean.

3. Getting Ready

When preparing for a hurricane, you should ensure your insurance policy and personal documentation are up to date. Make copies and try to keep them in a secure password-protected digital space so you can access them whenever you need them. You’ll want to strengthen your home by decluttering the drains and bringing in outside furniture. Last but not least, try to keep your cell phone charged at all times and have a backup power solution.

4. Gather Supplies

Have enough supplies for your household to last at least a few days up to a week. Supplies should include but aren’t limited to any medications, disinfectant supplies, masks, and pet supplies should you need them. Create an emergency go bag or store necessary supplies in a car trunk; you may not have access to supplies as such for days or even weeks in the event of an emergency.
