How to Prepare for Hurricanes

According to the CDC, hurricane season spans from the middle of May through the end of November.

If you live in an area affected by hurricanes such as Florida, Texas, Louisiana, North and South Carolina, and even New York, you might be wondering how to prepare for hurricanes so you don’t get blindsided in the event of an emergency or severe weather conditions.

Below, Geneverse goes over a few measures you can take to prepare for hurricanes.

What is a Hurricane?

Hurricanes are believed to be caused primarily by warm ocean water and begin over the ocean, occurring as tropical storms triggered by atmospheric disturbances. Hurricanes are classified as big rotating tropical storms that contain winds stronger than 74 mph, generally occurring in the Atlantic ocean but can also develop elsewhere. Hurricanes are generally called typhoons when they occur in the western Pacific. When hurricanes occur in the Indian Ocean they are called cyclones.

In the center of a hurricane is a cloud free area called “the eye”. A ring of thunderstorms called the eye wall surrounds the eye. Extending from the eye are spiral bands of clouds, rain, and, yes, more thunderstorms.

Preparing for Hurricanes

If you believe a hurricane is coming your way, make sure to listen to National Weather Service alerts and pay attention to local news sources. Make sure to take a note of the difference between a “Hurricane Watch” and a “Hurricane Warning”. Hurricane watches occur 48 hours stating the possibility of tropical-storm-force winds while hurricane warnings are issued when tropical-storm-force winds are expected to occur.

Depending on the severity of your circumstances, immediate action may need to be taken.

Make an Emergency Kit

Making an emergency kit and keeping it in a well-known and easily-accessible area of the house will help you save time during an emergency. Pack your emergency kit with flashlights, first aid materials, bottled water, non-perishable food items, batteries, severe weather attire, etc.

If you have a smaller family, one emergency kit will likely suffice. If you have a larger family, 2-3 emergency kits may be necessary.

Get Your Vehicle Ready

If you live in an area of town that is easily flooded, it may be necessary to evacuate to higher ground. It’s important to have your vehicle ready to go in case you have to relocate. Make sure to pack everything you’ll need while you’re away from home. Pack your emergency kit, extra food & water, and make sure to also pack your cell phone, smart devices, and any crucial medical equipment you might need.

Gather Family and Pets

If and when it’s time to evacuate, make sure to unplug all of your appliances at home. Gather all family members and pets in order to make a safe and efficient exit.

Continue to check local weather conditions and check your household’s emergency plan to make sure you haven’t missed anything.

Have an Alternative Source of Power

During emergencies and severe weather events, it’s important to have a backup power source. Gas-powered generators can get the job done, however, you cannot use them indoors and you have to rely on fuel, which isn’t always easy to get during an emergency.

A solar generator will be more convenient in emergency scenarios. At Geneverse, our products are reliable, renewable, and good for any emergency situation. You can charge your Geneverse solar generator via AC outlet, your vehicle, or via solar panel. Our products offer up to 7 days of power on a single charge for appliances, smart devices, and crucial medical equipment.
